African Oryx

Oryx gazella

Description:

A small group African Oryx spotted just before sunset, south of the White Sands Missile Range, NM. These gazelles were grazing approximately 50-100 meters off the highway.

Habitat:

African Oryx are gazelles originally from the Kalahari region of Africa. In 1969 the New Mexico Game and Fish Department released African Oryx on the White Sands Missile Range as part of its exotic animal introduction program.

Notes:

I wouldn't normally post the same animal two days in a row, but this time I went back to the same location as the previous day approximately one hour before sunset (before the sun went behind the mountains) and I think the photos turned out much better. Hopefully the beautiful black and white detailing on these gazelles is a little easier to see now.
