Tamarix aphylla
This plant seemed like a bunch of dead dry sticks until last week. Then it exploded into beautiful racemes of pale pink and small rounded, sheathed leaves looking slightly like fat pine needles. The flowers only lasted for one week.
Suburban hospital garden under red ironbarks in very dry and clay type soil.
Thanks to CindyBinghamKaiser for ID. This is yet another plant on 'weed alert' status in Australia. http://www.weeds.org.au/cgi-bin/weediden... and seems to have gone into the most arid areas. Must be very hardy and tolerant of dry conditions.

It would seem the weevil not here. Maybe our zillions of camels can do something about it :)
You're welcome, Argy! They really are pretty for a couple weeks and yes, it's a shame they're so invasive. We have a weevil (Coniatus splendidulus) that was introduced from Europe to help control the Tamarix in the area. I wonder if you have it there as well.
Thanks for that Cindy. Looks like yet another invasive species on 'weed' alert here, (as well as many other parts of the world). What a shame as it's so pretty for a week or two.
Hi Argy, it looks like a species of Tamarix.
