Lerema accius
In skipper you need any shot you have! Yours is actually quite a good shot for ID, since it shows all parts of the wings quite clearly, however, it is still not easy to get an ID. I will kepp an eye on it...
Thanks so much for looking into this one! I had no idea about the difficulty and detail Skippers presented for a definite ID and I am sure enjoying learning more about them! Thought I was doing good distinguishing a Lerema accius from the female Zabulon Skipper (Paones zabulon) with their white border on the hindwing. I may have more pictures of this one if there is anything in particular that would be helpful to clarify.
Spots in the same species are mostly the same size and at the same place. The problem is, that these spots/stripes and other markings are not always clearly visible (age, folded wings, shadow, hairs, light angulation) and there are many, many with similar spots and markings at mostly the same place and about the same size, but yet, not "identical". Sometimes only the distance from one spot to the other and horizontal or vertical relationship between the spots itselves and for instance spots/veins relationship may be the key issue for a definite ID. Skippers are still one of the most difficult family to ID, specially all these "just brown" ones. I will have an eye on it...
That's what I thought at first too, but I was seeing more variety with spots and color than expected for Lerema accius when looking them up. Also, the location spotted seems just outside/north of their usual southern US range. I'll keep it up in the Help ID section for now. Thanks!
