Superb Fairy Wren

Malurus cyaneus

Description:

Tiny bird with conspicuous dark blue/black head with pale blue cap, cheeks, and collar. Light grey breast and pale brown wings.

Habitat:

I see these birds hopping around in the undergrowth and low shrubs on the railway embankment a lot (i.e. open area, not woodland). They seem to spend a lot of time down low or on the ground. They seem to have adapted to humans being around - though they keep their distance and move on if you try to approach too close, they will hop around among the cars in our carpark if you keep still.

Notes:

There are quite often 2 or 3 males with several females (lacking the blue and black facial markings) all moving together as a group.
