Drakes have an iridescent green head, black bill that is wider at the tip than it is joining the head. Breast and underparts are white. Upper parts are black with lighter markings and chestnut color. Hen, many ducks is mottled shades of brown. The hens usually shaped bill distinguishes her from other species.
