Greenbriar Berries

Smilax rotundifolia

Description:

The fruit greenbriar produces are bluish black berries that become ripe in September. Many animals eat the berries that stay throughout winter. The leaves are shiny green and the veins form a smile. The early new leaves are edible raw, but later are too tough to eat. The tuber can be roasted and ground into flour. The vines form a thick tangle which is often a favorite place for birds to nest.

Habitat:

Woods.

Notes:

Wichita Forest Park is leased from the U.S. Army corps of Engineers, and is located on the south side of Highland Village Road. This 24 acre natural resource area park serves as a passive, wildlife area. It remains in a native state, and it is the habitat for various species of flora and fauna. There are natural surface trails throughout this site that allow citizens the ability to access and enjoy the benefits of this nature preserve.
