Northern Brown Snake

Storeria dekayi dekayi

Description:

about 30cm (1'), aggressive when disturbed

Habitat:

trail, temperate forest

Notes:

A friend and I spotted this brown snake sunning itself on the trail in Short Hills provincial park. It was right across the trail and I didn't want a mountain bike running over it or someone stepping on it, so I tried to encourage it off the trail. Well it wasn't having any of that. It immediately struck out at me and then assumed its defensive position and was ready to strike at anything that got too close. We just left it alone.
