Yellowbelly water snake

Nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster

Description:

HARMLESS (Non-Venomous) snake. The Yellowbelly Water Snake is active mainly during the daytime. During the hot summer months it is active in the early morning, late afternoon, and at night. Commonly found in rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps, and cypress strands.

Habitat:

This yellowbelly water snake was spotted on a dead tree stump along the marsh trail at Avery Island, Louisiana. This was truly an unexpected spotting since I'm not fond of snakes.
