Bright red with a gleaming white stem. Round, button-like cap. Height of about 1".
Growing on detritus and dirt in a forest.
I've no idea of the species of Russula (tentative ID given). There are hundreds.

I also thought it was a Russula species, but I was thrown off by the shape of the cap. It is likely that you're correct, chester. I'm not totally sure, but I'll list it as that for now. Thanks!
My money is on Russula emetica
It's possible, and I wish I had taken photos of the gills... I simply didn't have the time. Thanks for your input, Seema!
