Mountain Bluet

Centaurea montana

Description:

Solitary, fringed, purple flowers with pink/red centers and black-edged involucre bracts. Flowers sit atop on unbranched stems and grow 1-2' tall. Large, green, lance-shaped leaves grow up to 7" long.

Habitat:

Spotted growing on the edge of a wet woodland habitat. There was only a few plants that I could see, but I noticed a lot of variation in the coloring of the flowers - from light lavender to dark purple.

Notes:

Endemic to Europe, this flower escapes gardens very easily and has thus become established in North America.
