White-barred Piculet

Picumnus cirratus

Description:

The smallest woodpecker of Argentina. No larger than a common sparrow. White and black barred chest, white belly and brown dorsal. Males have a reddish area in the forehead. Order Piciform, Family Picidae.

Habitat:

Related to forested areas from northern Argentina to the River Plate area. I have seen it always in the forests associated with the Parana River basin, but they are also common inside the country. I took this picture in the Natural Reserve called Ribera Norte, in San Isidro town, 20 Km to the north of Buenos Aires City.
