I suspect molt. During certain times of the year the birds will molt many feathers, some birds to the extent that they lack feathers on their heads. The crest feathers on this individual could be growing back. During Aug-Nov I often see Cardinals and Blue Jays with minimal crests.

Oh cool...I only ask because this bird is lacking an obvious crest and the extent of the blue is greater on the underparts than typical subspecies of Steller's jay...jays in genus cyanolyca exhibit those traits which got me wondering...but this could just be an aberrant individual because the color pattern of subspecies ridgewayi that you presented was indeed different...I'm just wondering what happened to the crest...

Xiaoxuan, there is one record of a Steller's x Blue Jay hybrid, but none from the genus Cyanolyca.

The place mentioned is exactly the same habitat at the other side of the city.

Indeed the colors of the head are very different.

I was going to confirm the ID suggestion with a Guatemalan expert. But one if them appears in the story Liam shared, and so a strellers jay picture. So I'll take it as correct.

Have steller's jays been known to hybridize with other blue-colored jays? Especially those of genus cyanolyca?

The Central American form looks incredibly different than the American form.
