Ghost Shrimp

Paratya australiensis

Description:

A 'fisherman' at a local lake was getting freshwater shrimp in a net. I have never seen these before in Australia so must find out something about them. Are they introduced or native? Are they a problem?

Habitat:

Artificial suburban parkland in freshwater lake.

Notes:

Thanks LuckyLogan for ID. More notes to come... http://www.publish.csiro.au/paper/MF1206...

Thanks LL. That's great info. I'll read up on it. An endemic - good !

The are commonly used in freshwater aquariums for food for fish or removal of algae. I actually feed my fish these a few weeks ago.
