Flower Cerambycid

Ochraethes obliquus

Description:

This Long-horn Beetle of the Family Cerambycidae only emerges in October and November when this composite flower is in bloom. The beetle matches the interior of the flower so exactly that it can scarcely be seen until it moves. They fly readily and are very fast. The 4th picture of both the male and female together (the male is usually smaller), was taken in the same place on 20 November 2013.

Habitat:

Abandoned field, semi-urban area on the outskirts of the city, 2,200 meters. The last picture is from an Oak and shrub forest area of the Tenam Puente Mayan ruins in Comitan, Chiapas, Mexico. Found wherever this flower is blooming in Chiapas.
