Mergus merganser
Irridescent green head contrasting with red bill and striking white body. Serrated bill to help eat fish.
winters in ponds and rivers like this one at Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC. Nests in woodlands near water or in sheltered coastal areas.
6 males and 1 female were hiding along the brushy edge of Lost Lagoon, seemingly enjoying a little bit of late afternoon sun on these very cold days for Vancouver. Sunny though!

Thanks, Alice! Saw more of these striking male mergansers on the Fraser River today very close to where we live:)
Gorgeous!
Love how they lined up for me!
