Common Merganser - male

Description:

Irridescent green head contrasting with red bill and striking white body. Serrated bill to help eat fish.

Habitat:

winters in ponds and rivers like this one at Stanley Park, Vancouver, BC. Nests in woodlands near water or in sheltered coastal areas.

Notes:

6 males and 1 female were hiding along the brushy edge of Lost Lagoon, seemingly enjoying a little bit of late afternoon sun on these very cold days for Vancouver. Sunny though!
