Spilosoma canescens ( Ardices canescens)
A beautiful white moth about 20 mm long ( wing span about 40 mm). Both sides of the wings showed a smattering of dark spots. The pattern was better defined on the upper side - each wing showed a single dark spot, one near the wing base and one near the apex. there were a about three dark spots near the costa and these seemed in line with diagonally placed spots in the middle of the wing. Thorax and underside of the abdomen were white. part of the fore legs and the upper side of the abdomen were red. Laterally, each abdominal segment had a black patch, nicely separating the red upper side from the white under belly.
Spotted under bright lights near a national park
Here's my earlier spotting of a similar species with different spot pattern http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/173... These moths seem very cooperative (torpid) when resting, making it easy to turn them round, gently raise their wings, etc for photos. Also called Light Ermine Moth Family: Arctiidae Subfamily: Arctiinae
