Swallowtail

Papilio machaon

Description:

Large, about 8 cm in wingspan, and attractive, mainly yellow butterfly from the family Papilionidae. Black markings on forewings, black and blue ones on hindwings. There are also protruding tails and red spots on hindwings.

Habitat:

Just after our holidays on Adriatic coast and first trek across few tops of Jura mountain, I came across the old friend, regularly found here on these pastures and rocks above the treeline (above 1500m). This year, unlike previous years, the entire area is very, very, very dry, and pastures appears almost burnt down.
