Eastern-Eyed Click Beetle

Alaus oculatus

Description:

Large and impressive specimen. About 2-inches in length from top to bottom. Unique "eyes" on the pronotum. It's elytra looked like it was dipped in powdered sugar.

Habitat:

This one was found on a tree in a friend's backyard, located above a small woodpile.

Notes:

This is the only time I've ever seen this species. I had never even heard of this beetle before, but it was one of the most impressive insects I've ever seen. I assumed that it was just covered in pollen, but apparently that's just the look of this beetle!
