Carduus nutans
Low growing hardy plant, usually requiring two years to complete its cycle. The specimen here was not very tall - about 40cm in height, with rough waxy and spiny leaves, and large purple flower-heads.
Found (and observed regularly) growing in coastal heaths of Brittany, France; most often on very rocky terrains, often isolated from other vegetation. Most of heaths visited were protected.
