Beech Blight Aphid

Grylloprociphilus imbricator

Description:

This species of aphid forms large colonies on American Beech trees. They appear to be fuzzy but, in fact, the fuzz is a waxy secretion. These aphids produce honeydew that is the only host of a particular species of Sooty Mould Fungus, Scorias spongiosa (photo #5). This species of aphid can sting to defend itself from predators.

Habitat:

American Beech, Fagus grandifolia. Temperate forest. Rockwood Park, Virginia.
