Congratulations Kimberly.M, your spectacular Long-tailed widowbird is our Spotting of the Day!

"It's always a delight to receive images of a Long-tailed widowbird (Euplectes progne), our Spotting of the Day! The tail of the male long-tailed widowbird is one of the most remarkable ornaments found in passerine birds. Between six and eight of its tail feathers can reach half a metre (approximately 20 inches) long. The seemingly detrimental cost of having such cumbersome male ornaments has resulted in the long-tailed widowbird being the subject of extensive research into the function and evolution of sexually selected traits.
