Asiatic Rhinoceros Beetle

Oryctes rhinoceros

Description:

Large and sturdy-looking scarab beetle. Prominent horn (like a rhinoceros) that gives it the name The last picture shows it on the palm of my gardener's hand...for size reference. The back has a sort of design on it, rather attractive.

Habitat:

It is reportedly a serious pest of coconut...there are a few trees in my locality. This one popped out of the bag of organic cowdung manure I had purchased for my potted plants.

Notes:

It was encrusted in cowdung so we sprinkled a little water on it to wash away the stuff from its horn. See the grub here: https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/15...
