Like Ashley said. The Horned has a clean line from the mouth to just below the eye to almost the back of the head. Eared doesn't have that. And to me I look also for that petticoat by the tail. It shows more in an Eared then the Horned.

You tell the two in winter plumage apart by the amount of white on the face/neck. Eared doesn't have much white at all.

nonbreeding horned and eared are so similar,that i was hoping this one would be an eared. Doesn't it's back look more fluffier for a horned grebe?
