American bittern

Botaurus lentiginosus

Description:

A large stout heron that is rarely seen. Its speckled chestnut plumage blends into vegetation making it difficult to see. It has a long slender neck with streaks when extended (see pic 3). Pic 4 shows it with a small fish.

Habitat:

Spotted foraging next to a wetland at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge.
