Lion-tailed macaque

Macaca silenus

Description:

A charismatic endangered and endemic primates species found in the Western Ghats of India. It is one of the key species which highlights the biodiversity of Western Ghats Major populations are found in the southern western ghats of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and few numbers are seen in Agumbe and Sirsi in Karnataka which is welcome sign. The Lion Tailed macaques are feed of the indigenous fruits and small vertebrates. They have to compete with the local troupes of Rhesus macaques. We observed the LTMs chased away by the R macaques. We were surprised to see the LTMs backing off instead of fighting back. May be they wanted peace!
