Night Frog

Nyctibatrachus sp.

Description:

Spotted this prime estate owner! It is very important for the males of these Nightfrog (Nyctibatrachus) species to 'own' a perfect clump of over-hanging leaves on a flowing stream. To win a female to mate with, they need to be good at choosing the location of the 'estate' and then acquire it. To acquire it, they need to wrestle and compete with other males and also ensure that they advertise it perfectly by constant calling (almost all night long). If a male is good at doing all of the above then he may successfully pair up with many females and lay different clutches which makes the one in the image definitely rich. After all, in the business of real estate, it is always about location, location, location!

Habitat:

Overhanging leaves in a forest stream

Notes:

The building of dams, development, polluted streams and climate change are some of the threats to these endemic species that still are surviving in small pockets of the Western Ghats. If not conserved, the nights of these streams will be eerily silent without them around
