Northern Old Lady Moth

Dasypodia cymatodes

Notes:

This moth is the size of a small bird. (Okay, not really... wingspan is about 8cm, but that's big enough for me.) It looks dull brown to the naked eye - it wasn't until I took these photos that I was able to see the eye spots and zig-zags on the wings. This is a Noctuidae moth in the sub-family Catocalinae. Moths in this sub-family with eye-shaped markings on the wings are known as "owlets".

How did I miss this. Fantastic to know there's a northern version as well.
