American Goldfinch

Spinus tristis

Description:

This is a small finch with beautiful black and white feathers, olive green around the head and neck, conical bill and a notched tail. I believe this is a nonbreeding male.

Habitat:

This guy was found in my backyard. Habitat includes fields, floodplains, and urban areas.

Notes:

Fun Facts: 1. These birds are the only finches that molt twice yearly. 2. The American Goldfinch has a strictly vegetarian diet. 3. Cow birds often lay their eggs in the nests of goldfinches but the offspring usually do not survive due the finches vegetarian diet.
