Armillaria gallica
A type of honey fungus. Dry brown caps. They grow in bunches. About an inch and a half tall.
In the grass, growing on a mostly-concealed tree root in full sun.
Thanks, Dan! Yeah, oddly these particular 'shrooms are medium-sized, but if they're in the proper conditions they can grow quite large.
Nice name, though they don't look that big to me!
There may have been old tree roots beneath the grass; it's possible. I'll put that up as the tentative ID. Thanks, gully!
It looks like Armillaria gallica to me. Could there have been wood beneath the grass?
