Humungous fungus

Armillaria gallica

Description:

A type of honey fungus. Dry brown caps. They grow in bunches. About an inch and a half tall.

Habitat:

In the grass, growing on a mostly-concealed tree root in full sun.

Thanks, Dan! Yeah, oddly these particular 'shrooms are medium-sized, but if they're in the proper conditions they can grow quite large.

There may have been old tree roots beneath the grass; it's possible. I'll put that up as the tentative ID. Thanks, gully!

It looks like Armillaria gallica to me. Could there have been wood beneath the grass?
