Galapagos tortoise

Geochelone nigra

Description:

Big old tortoises with loads of character - this one was 40+ years old and would nip at the zookeeper's legs if he stopped rubbing his neck! Kept in a simple, large enclosure bordered by open vertical poles spaced about 80 cm apart so as not to allow the shell to pass through.

Habitat:

Melbourne Zoo

When I visited the San Diego zoo, the Galapagos tortoises would come up really close to the fence and wait for you to reach over and pet their heads, it was pretty cool :) They do have interesting personalities!
