Hippodamia convergens
There are so many ladybugs hibernating in Redwood Regional Park, Oakland, CA. They hibernate in the park every year and this is the first time I have seen them. Really amazing!
Along the Stream Trail, Redwood Regional Park, Oakland, CA
In the western United States, these beetles may spend up to nine months hibernating in large aggregations in mountain valleys, far from their aphid food sources. In spring, the adults spread out and search for suitable sites to lay their eggs where aphids are plentiful. This dispersal trait is especially marked in this species as compared to other lady beetles.

This spotting is truly amazing!
Now that is what I call a LadyBug Convention. I had a friend who once had a good portion of one outside wall of his house covered with them. There had to be several thousand of them. The most I ever saw in one place at one time. I did not have a camera with me at the time, it was in a farming community, and they were drawn to the house because of the warmer temperature of the wall and the cold temperatures of the air. Your photo reminds me of that day several years ago when I saw more lady bugs in one day then I may have seen combined in my entire life.
