Common Checkered-Skipper

Pyrgus communis

Notes:

Thought this was the same as another one I posted but the pattern on the wing shows it was different

According to the listings I found for my area there are 3 Pyrgus species.
Two-banded Checkered-Skipper -- (Pyrgus ruralis) dark abdomen
Small Checkered-Skipper -- (Pyrgus scriptura)white abdomon but pale underside of wing
Common Checkered-Skipper -- (Pyrgus communis) white and brown abdomen and contrasting underside.

Are you sure it is Pyrgus communis? Not that I want to challenge your ID, but in California there are some more (at least to my knowledge) and the perspective is tricky to get down to species level. At the moment I am too busy for such a tricky one ;-)...

Now bayucca can you ID the other two? The white one I just can't find too many moths with upright wings and it doesn't look like a skipper. Tried BAMONA but they needed more wing and I didn't get a shot of it with more wing, it flew off before I could

Didn't see any when I was there earlier this moth Kathleen. But if it was raining down there like it was here then soon.

Thank you for catching that. Those skippers sometimes look like moths so I wasn't sure without seeing the whole thing.

In my eyes a Pyrgus skipper not a moth.

Oh well, it was a thought. But the deserts bloom in February there don't they?

Oops forgot to change the date. But we did have rain for the past 4 days. We've been in a drought for awhile.
