This is a Cottonmouth. I do most of my nature photos from a kayak so I know exactly who to stay away from. I have a good picture of a Northern Water snake and will post it tomorrow.

You are correct on your ID, it is indeed a cottonmouth. Here is a brochure that explains the differences and can help with identification:

Sorry, Stephanie, but this most definitely IS a cottonmouth.
This is not a cotton mouth. This snake is non venomous.
