White-headed Buffalo-Weaver

Dinemellia dinemelli

Description:

Large weaver (some 20cm of length) with white body underparts and head; and dark-brown to blackish upperparts (including wing covers). Upperparts are stripped stripped with contrasting white. Red rump and vent. Black bill and strip between the bill and eye. As far as I'm aware, it is difficult to confuse with other species.

Habitat:

White-headed Buffalo-weaver is an endemic species for North-East Africa. Seen while travelling through north of Somali region in Ethiopia (Shinile zone). Semi-arid savanna, with some sporadic acacia trees and shrubs.

Notes:

Another lucky field trip - while going back to our base, lucky spotting as I am a great fan of weavers. This fella gave me just enough time to click these three shots, and luckily for me they were all presentable. My first spotting of this species.
