Red-bellied Woodpecker (female)

Melanerpes carolinus

Description:

This female red-bellied woodpecker has a red and gray crown, some red front feathers and black and white striped back. It was pecking intently and eating the bugs it turned up. The females can be distinguished from the male because their red crown does not reach all the way to the front of their face.

Nice series of the female Red-bellied Woodpecker. The males have the red crown running right down to the top of the beak.
