Wheel Bug

Arilus cristatus

Description:

Large, conspicuous grey insect with prominent dorsal crest, red antennae and red, recurved proboscus. Inky black spot across anterior wings.

Habitat:

Cypress swamp surrounding second magnitude spring system in north central Florida. Hornsby Spring at Camp Kulaqua High Springs, FL

Notes:

Nymphs and adults were abundant in the surrounding area and campsite. They acted weary and slowly shied away when approached, but were otherwise unaggressive even upon capture for closer inspection. While this species is notorious for it's painful bite, they seem a benign presence when left alone.
