Porphyrio martinica
Chicken-sized bird 11-13". Colorful with purple/purplish blue featherers that change to iridescent green on the back from the middle to above the tail. Tail is white underneath. Deep blue on the head down into the breast area. Bill is red and yellow. Legs are yellow/yellow-green ending in long toes.
Marsh.
This is the bird all the birders want to find! It can be seen walking lightly on lily pads and branches supporting itself on long toes. Lily pads and low bushes are places the Purple Gallinule can be seen searching for food.
