kingfisher

Megaceryle alcyon

Description:

This bird has a large head, shark beak, and stubby tail. It is black and white in color. Larger than an American robin, smaller than a redtail hawk.

Habitat:

This bird was spotted flying over the west fork of the Red River in rural Todd County, Kentucky. It perched on tree limbs overhanging the small river, which locally is called West Fork Creek. The area is farmland.

Notes:

My attention was first drawn to the bird by its loud call.
