Great cormoran

Phalacrocorax carbo

Description:

The Great Cormorant is a large black bird (length 77-94 cm, wingspan 121-149 cm), and a widespread member of the cormorant family of seabirds. In flight it looks quite goose-like: neck outstreched and flying at some height.

Habitat:

Spotted flying over a large Central European lake. This cormorant feeds on the sea, in estuaries, and on freshwater lakes and rivers. Northern birds migrate south and winter along coasts which are well-supplied with fish.

Notes:

Often found in flocks but this one was flying alone. By winter these birds will have moved further South towards France, Spain and North Africa.
