Black Girdled Lizard

Cordylus niger

Description:

± 20 cm lizard - black medium-sized lizard restricted to Table Mountain on the Cape Peninsula They are spiny, flat, and pitch black in colour. Their colour helps these unique lizards to absorb sufficient heat from the sun, in what is one of the darkest, least sunny parts of South Africa.

Habitat:

Found in a rocky area at Cape Point Nature Reserve.

Notes:

This is actually two individuals, they are very shy and fast. Not used to humans. Both were very big indeed.
