Ambystoma laterale
huge salamander 14cm (5.5") long
native to the Great Lakes states and northeastern United States, and parts of Ontario and Quebec in Canada.
This was spotted by a coworker I was working with in a flower bed at Table Rock at the brink of Niagara Falls. When he told me he found a salamander, I was picturing the tiny red backed salamander. I was blown away when I saw how big this salamander was. It was my first time seeing this species. I put it in a safe place until we finished working in the bed but I couldn't leave it because the bed was going to be rototilled the next day. I took a few photos and then released it a bit further upstream. I didn't even notice the hair in the first photo until after I took the shot.

He was very lucky to be spotted by you and your coworker. :)
I love these! I had four of these guys a long time ago! They lived a long time!
I wouldn't have it any other way Daniele!
Thanks for saving it from the rototiller:-)
