Bird's-eye Speedwell

Veronica chamaedrys

Description:

Sometimes difficult with this genus, with over 500 species having all roughly the same flower... I believe this one is Germander speedwell, usually common herbaceous perennial in continental Europe, also known as Bird's-eye speedwell or Cat's eyes - Veronica chamaedrys. This Veronica grows some 30 to 40 cm tall, presents opposite roundly-dented leaves (Ph N° 3) and loose inflorescences of blue flowers; flowers are small, about 10 mm in diameter.

Habitat:

Common European wildflower, widespread throughout the continent and found in a variety of habitats. Here, found inside beautiful and protected 'Bois du Faisan' forest (somewhat mixed, but predominantly deciduous forest, a lot of oak). The forest is in the lake Geneva lowland, just in between Jura and Alps mountains ranges. Found growing in shade of trees bordering a walking path, close to the river banks.

Notes:

Most species of the Veronica genus are comestible, and used as tea or salads; I'm finding that some taste like watercress; but I haven't tried myself yet. Some of Veronica species were also used as herbal tea for treating respiratory and cardiovascular problems, nervous systems disorders etc. This particular Veronica is said to possess glucoside named aucubine - toxic for some insects and some warm-blooded animals as well.
