tube spittlebug - male

Chaetophyes compacta

Description:

An all black spittle bug about 3mm long with tented black wings, a pitted thorax and deep red eyes. Might have had a few small white markings on the wings. Seen on a young eucalyptus tree beside a spittle tube (pic #4). It escaped to another branch when disturbed ( pics #1-#3)

Habitat:

Eucalytpus tree

Notes:

Here is a spotting of an attractive spittle bug by martinl http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/155... I learnt from martinl's spotting that all males of this species are black - also seen here in this weblink http://lifeunseen.com/index2_item_3653.p...

Nice capture Leuba. I agree with your ID. Last year I saw mainly males but this year mainly females. They are not usually keen to be photographed.
