Panorpa communis
The common scorpionfly has a black and yellow body, with a reddish head and tail. The male possesses a pair of claspers at the end of its tail (for holding the female during mating), giving it a scorpion-like appearance; it is not a stinger. Native to Western Europe.
Hedge, alpine meadow, alt. 1400 m.
The adults rarely fly very far although they are fully winged, and spend much of their time crawling on vegetation in shaded places near water and along hedgerows. The Panorpidae family contains more than 350 species.
