rosy maple moth

Dryocampa rubicunda

Description:

Yellow fuzzy body with pink and yellow wings and pink legs. About 2 cm head to tail and 3 cm wingtip to wingtip (estimated).

Habitat:

Remote deciduous woods in the low mountains near the South Branch of the Potomac River in Hampshire County, West Virginia, USA.

Notes:

This pretty saturniid lepidopteran was attracted by our porch light. Photo was taken at 11 PM. The moth was docile and didn't mind being crawling around on my hand. It hung around for a few days.
