Mona Monkey

Cercopithecus Mona

Description:

This monkey has brown agouti fur with a white rump, and the tail and legs are black. The face of the mona monkey is blue- grey with a dark stripe across the face, while others are dark grey with red on their back. In the case of a female Mona monkey, the head & body length is 37-45 cm, not including the tail. For the male, the length is 41-63 cm. The tail length alone for a female monkey is 53-65 cm, and for the male it's 64-88 cm. The male monkey weighs in at about 10 lbs, while the female is about 6 lbs. Animals that share the same environment as the Mona Monkey, are Baboons, Mangabeys & Macaques. Some common traits are their cheek pouches, low & rounded molar cusps, and simple stomachs. These are all adaptations to their diet. The Mona Monkey has a parasitism relationship with the Chimpanzee. The Chimpanzee will kill the Mona Monkey for food, while the Mona Monkey lives peacefully with the Bonobos, who alert each other of other predators. The Mona Monkey eats all the food the island provides. They live off of fruit, leaves & some insects. The way the monkeys get around is easy for them as they have four legs and can swing from vines. Reproduction occurs when a male & female Mona Monkey come together to produce a young. Typically the female only chooses one male. The gestation period is 5-6 months and usually only one young is born at a time, although twins can occur. The babies are born up in a tree and are weaned after a year. The monkey is mature at 2-5 years of age.

Habitat:

The Mona monkey lives throughout western Africa, but can also be found in Grenada. This type of monkey eats leaves, fruit and some kinds of insects. Chimpanzees are Mona monkeys predators, they eat the monkeys. Mona monkeys are very well suited to their environment, they have everything they need to fit their environment.

most interesting fact: The symbiotic relationship between the Mona Monkey and the Chimpanzee.

This picture reveals there habitat, This particular monkey is not living far out in the wild, but closer to civilization. This may mean that this affects the monkeys diet as well. They may include human food in their diet due to the fact that it is more people friendly than other monkeys. It also may be safer from predators.
