About 14 millimeters long, colored as shown.

Habitat:

Rocky slope in deciduous forest, dry upland forest. Found beetle under a sheet of tin (metal), placed as cover for snakes.

Notes:

Bombardier beetles blast enemies with a potent cocktail of hot, explosive gas. There is an audible "pop," and a truly hot sensation if one blasts you while you are holding it.
