Sooty Mold Fungus

Scorias spongiosa

Description:

Black, fibrous and gelatinous. I had no idea what this stuff was initially. I saw it up on branches of American Beech trees and some on the ground (under the beech trees). I finally found a large mass on the ground and decided to take a closer look. Yes, I poked it with a stick. This fungus only grows on the honeydew produced by the Beech Blight Aphid, Grylloprociphilus imbricator.

Habitat:

Temperate forest. American Beech trees (Fagus grandifolia). Rockwood Park, Virginia.

Notes:

To see the Beech Blight Aphid with some of this fungus, check out my other spotting here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/156...
