Common daisy

Bellis perennis

Description:

In ancient Rome, the surgeons who accompanied Roman legions into battle would carry sacks full of daisies in order to extract their juice, hence the origin of this plant's scientific name in Latin. Bandages were soaked in this juice and would then be used to bind sword and spear cuts. The legeons used to carry except of fresh and dry flowers, and large quantities of seeds, and that's how that Mediterranean plant, was spread in central and northern europe, and thw British isles. Now it is widely naturalised in most temperate regions including the Americas and Australasia. Those plants grow and flourish in my yard, Kilbirnie Wellington, NZ.
