Toxic by some definitions of the word, however I'd prefer to describe them as Psychoactive. Fry one cap in butter for a delicious toast topping and a light alcohol-like intoxication. Eat a few more for deliriant-hallucinogenic effects. They are not believed to cause death except possibly in excessive consumption by the very old, young or ill, however many books still report them to be lethal.
